The Atonement
Now you must understand the atonement as a revealed
fact, that God has supplied the provision to forgive all your sin upon you
meeting the necessary condition (repentance and faith) that enables you to be
reconciled with God your creator. You must be convinced that Christ has paid
your penalty for you as your own sin offering. He was sacrificed for you in
PROPITIATION-to meet the righteous demands of a broken moral law, making it
possible for God, as moral governor, to forgive; to appease ("That He might
be just and the justifier of him that believeth in Jesus." Romans 3:26)
Explained.
Romans 5:8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we
were still sinners, Christ died for us. 9 Since we have now been justified by
his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God's wrath through him! 10 For
if, when we were God's enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of
his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his
life! 11 Not only is this so, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus
Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.
2 Corinthians 5:18 All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself
through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: 19 that God was
reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting men's sins against
them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation.
Galatians 1:4 who gave himself for our sins to rescue us from the
present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father,
1 John 2:2 He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for
ours but also for the sins of the whole world.
1 John 4:10 This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us
and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.
Foreordained.
Romans 3:25 God presented him as a sacrifice of atonement, through faith
in his blood. He did this to demonstrate his justice, because in his forbearance
he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished-
1 Peter 1:11 trying to find out the time and circumstances to which
the Spirit of Christ in them was pointing when he predicted the sufferings of
Christ and the glories that would follow.
1 Peter 1:20 He was chosen before the creation of the world, but was
revealed in these last times for your sake.
Revelation 13:8 All inhabitants of the earth will worship the
beast--all whose names have not been written in the book of life belonging to
the Lamb that was slain from the creation of the world.
Foretold.
Isaiah 53:4 Surely he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows,
yet we considered him stricken by God, smitten by him, and afflicted. 5 But he
was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the
punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed.
6 We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way;
and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all. 8 By oppression and
judgement he was taken away. And who can speak of his descendants? For he was
cut off from the land of the living; for the transgression of my people he was
stricken. 9 He was assigned a grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his
death, though he had done no violence, nor was any deceit in his mouth. 10 Yet
it was the LORD's will to crush him and cause him to suffer, and though the LORD
makes his life a guilt offering, he will see his offspring and prolong his days,
and the will of the LORD will prosper in his hand. 11 After the suffering of his
soul, he will see the light [of life] and be satisfied; by his knowledge my
righteous servant will justify many, and he will bear their iniquities. 12
Therefore I will give him a portion among the great, and he will divide the
spoils with the strong, because he poured out his life unto death, and was
numbered with the transgressors. For he bore the sin of many, and made
intercession for the transgressors.
Daniel 9:24 "Seventy `sevens' are decreed for your people and
your holy city to finish transgression, to put an end to sin, to atone for
wickedness, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and
prophecy and to anoint the most holy. 25 "Know and understand this: From
the issuing of the decree to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until the Anointed
One, the ruler, comes, there will be seven `sevens,' and sixty-two `sevens.' It
will be rebuilt with streets and a trench, but in times of trouble. 26 After the
sixty-two `sevens,' the Anointed One will be cut off and will have nothing. The
people of the ruler who will come will destroy the city and the sanctuary. The
end will come like a flood: War will continue until the end, and desolations
have been decreed. 27 He will confirm a covenant with many for one `seven.' In
the middle of the `seven' he will put an end to sacrifice and offering. And on a
wing [of the temple] he will set up an abomination that causes desolation, until
the end that is decreed is poured out on him. "
Zechariah 13:1 "On that day a fountain will be opened to the
house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, to cleanse them from sin and
impurity. 2 "On that day, I will banish the names of the idols from the
land, and they will be remembered no more," declares the LORD Almighty.
"I will remove both the prophets and the spirit of impurity from the land.
3 And if anyone still prophesies, his father and mother, to whom he was born,
will say to him, `You must die, because you have told lies in the LORD's name.'
When he prophesies, his own parents will stab him. 4 "On that day every
prophet will be ashamed of his prophetic vision. He will not put on a prophet's
garment of hair in order to deceive. 5 He will say, `I am not a prophet. I am a
farmer; the land has been my livelihood since my youth. ' 6 If someone asks him,
`What are these wounds on your body ?' he will answer, `The wounds I was given
at the house of my friends.' 7 "Awake, O sword, against my shepherd,
against the man who is close to me!" declares the LORD Almighty.
"Strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered, and I will turn my
hand against the little ones.
John 11:50 You do not realise that it is better for you that one man
die for the people than that the whole nation perish." 51 He did not say
this on his own, but as high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die
for the Jewish nation, 52 and not only for that nation but also for the
scattered children of God, to bring them together and make them one.
Effected by Christ alone.
John 1:29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said,
"Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!
John 1:36 When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, "Look, the Lamb
of God!"
Acts 4:10 then know this, you and all the people of Israel: It is by
the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified but whom God raised
from the dead, that this man stands before you healed. 11 He is "`the stone
you builders rejected, which has become the capstone.' 12 Salvation is found in
no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we
must be saved."
1 Thessalonians 1:10 and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he
raised from the dead--Jesus, who rescues us from the coming wrath.
1 Timothy 2:5 For there is one God and one mediator between God and
men, the man Christ Jesus, 6 who gave himself as a ransom for all men--the
testimony given in its proper time.
Hebrews 2:9 But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the
angels, now crowned with glory and honour because he suffered death, so that by
the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.
1 Peter 2:24 He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, so that
we might die to sins and live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been
healed.
Was voluntary.
Psalms 40:6 Sacrifice and offering you did not desire, but my ears you
have pierced; burnt offerings and sin offerings you did not require. 7 Then I
said, "Here I am, I have come-- it is written about me in the scroll. 8 I
desire to do your will, O my God; your law is within my heart."

Hebrews 10:5 Therefore, when Christ came into the world, he said:
"Sacrifice and offering you did not desire, but a body you prepared for me;
6 with burnt offerings and sin offerings you were not pleased. 7 Then I said,
`Here I am--it is written about me in the scroll-- I have come to do your will,
O God.'" 8 First he said, "Sacrifices and offerings, burnt offerings
and sin offerings you did not desire, nor were you pleased with them"
(although the law required them to be made). 9 Then he said, "Here I am, I
have come to do your will." He sets aside the first to establish the
second.
John 10:11 "I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down
his life for the sheep. 12 The hired hand is not the shepherd who owns the
sheep. So when he sees the wolf coming, he abandons the sheep and runs away.
Then the wolf attacks the flock and scatters it. 13 The man runs away because he
is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep. 14 "I am the good
shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me-- 15 just as the Father knows me
and I know the Father--and I lay down my life for the sheep. 16 I have other
sheep that are not of this sheep pen. I must bring them also. They too will
listen to my voice, and there shall be one flock and one shepherd. 17 The reason
my Father loves me is that I lay down my life--only to take it up again. 18 No
one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to
lay it down and authority to take it up again. This command I received from my
Father."

Grace and mercy of God.
Romans 8:32 He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us
all--how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?
Ephesians 2:4 But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich
in mercy, 5 made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in
transgressions--it is by grace you have been saved. 6 And God raised us up with
Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, 7 in order
that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace,
expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus.
1 Timothy 2:4 who wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge
of the truth.
Hebrews 2:9 But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the
angels, now crowned with glory and honour because he suffered death, so that by
the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.
Love of God.
Romans 5:8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we
were still sinners, Christ died for us.
1 John 4:9 This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one
and only Son into the world that we might live through him. 10 This is love: not
that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice
for our sins.
Love of Christ.
John 15:13 Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life
for his friends.
Galatians 2:20 I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live,
but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son
of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
Ephesians 5:2 and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and
gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.
Ephesians 5:25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the
church and gave himself up for her
Revelation 1:5 and from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, the
firstborn from the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth. To him who
loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood,
Reconciles the justice and mercy of God.
Isaiah 45:21 Declare what is to be, present it-- let them take counsel
together. Who foretold this long ago, who declared it from the distant past? Was
it not I, the LORD? And there is no God apart from me, a righteous God and a
Saviour; there is none but me.
Romans 3:25 God presented him as a sacrifice of atonement, through
faith in his blood. He did this to demonstrate his justice, because in his
forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished-- 26 he did it
to demonstrate his justice at the present time, so as to be just and the one who
justifies those who have faith in Jesus.
Necessity for.
Luke 19:10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was
lost."
Hebrews 9:22 In fact, the law requires that nearly everything be
cleansed with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.
Made but once.
Hebrews 7:27 Unlike the other high priests, he does not need to offer
sacrifices day after day, first for his own sins, and then for the sins of the
people. He sacrificed for their sins once for all when he offered himself.
Hebrews 9:24 For Christ did not enter a man-made sanctuary that was
only a copy of the true one; he entered heaven itself, now to appear for us in
God's presence. 25 Nor did he enter heaven to offer himself again and again, the
way the high priest enters the Most Holy Place every year with blood that is not
his own. 26 Then Christ would have had to suffer many times since the creation
of the world. But now he has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to do
away with sin by the sacrifice of himself. 27 Just as man is destined to die
once, and after that to face judgement, 28 so Christ was sacrificed once to take
away the sins of many people; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin,
but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him.
Hebrews 10:10 And by that will, we have been made holy through the
sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. 11 Day after day every
priest stands and performs his religious duties; again and again he offers the
same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. 12 But when this priest had
offered for all time one sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of
God. 13 Since that time he waits for his enemies to be made his footstool, 14
because by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made
holy.
1 Peter 3:18 For Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for
the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made
alive by the Spirit,
Acceptable to God.
Ephesians 5:2 and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave
himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.
Reconciliation to God effected by.
Romans 5:10 For if, when we were God's enemies, we were reconciled to him
through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be
saved through his life!
2 Corinthians 5:18 All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself
through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: 19 that God was
reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting men's sins against
them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. 20 We are
therefore Christ's ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us.
We implore you on Christ's behalf: Be reconciled to God.
Ephesians 2:13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have
been brought near through the blood of Christ. 14 For he himself is our peace,
who has made the two one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of
hostility, 15 by abolishing in his flesh the law with its commandments and
regulations. His purpose was to create in himself one new man out of the two,
thus making peace, 16 and in this one body to reconcile both of them to God
through the cross, by which he put to death their hostility.
Colossians 1:20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things,
whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood,
shed on the cross. 21 Once you were alienated from God and were enemies in your
minds because of your evil behaviour. 22 But now he has reconciled you by
Christ's physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without
blemish and free from accusation--
Hebrews 2:17 For this reason he had to be made like his brothers in
every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in
service to God, and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people.
1 Peter 3:18 For Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for
the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made

without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless.
Titus 2:14 who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness
and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is
good.
Hebrews 10:10 And by that will, we have been made holy through the
sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
Hebrews 13:12 And so Jesus also suffered outside the city gate to make
the people holy through his own blood.

Power of sin.
Romans 8:3 For what the law was powerless to do in that it was weakened
by the sinful nature, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful
man to be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in sinful man, 4 in order that
the righteous requirements of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live
according to the sinful nature but according to the Spirit.
1 Peter 1:18 For you know that it was not with perishable things such
as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down
to you from your forefathers, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb
without blemish or defect.
Power of the World.
Galatians 1:4 who gave himself for our sins to rescue us from the present
evil age, according to the will of our God and Father,
Galatians 6:14 May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus
Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.
Power of the devil.
Colossians 2:15 And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a
public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.
Hebrews 2:14 Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in
their humanity so that by his death he might destroy him who holds the power of
death--that is, the devil-- 15 and free those who all their lives were held in
slavery by their fear of death.
True Christians glorify God for.
1 Corinthians 6:20 you were bought at a price. Therefore honour God with
your body.
Galatians 2:20 I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live,
but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son
of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
Philippians 1:20 I eagerly expect and hope that I will in no way be
ashamed, but will have sufficient courage so that now as always Christ will be
exalted in my body, whether by life or by death. 21 For to me, to live is Christ
and to die is gain.
True Christians rejoice in God for.
Romans 5:11 Not only is this so, but we also rejoice in God through our
Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.
True Christians praise God for.
Revelation 5:9 And they sang a new song: "You are worthy to take the
scroll and to open its seals, because you were slain, and with your blood you
purchased men for God from every tribe and language and people and nation. 10
You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to serve our God, and they will
reign on the earth." 11 Then I looked and heard the voice of many angels,
numbering thousands upon thousands, and ten thousand times ten thousand. They
encircled the throne and the living creatures and the elders.
Revelation 5:12 In a loud voice they sang: "Worthy is the Lamb,
who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honour
and glory and praise!" 13 Then I heard every creature in heaven and on
earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all that is in them, singing:
"To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be praise and honour and
glory and power, for ever and ever!"
Faith in, indispensable.
Romans 3:25 God presented him as a sacrifice of atonement, through faith
in his blood. He did this to demonstrate his justice, because in his forbearance
he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished--
Galatians 3:13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by
becoming a curse for us, for it is written: "Cursed is everyone who is hung
on a tree." 14 He redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham
might come to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus, so that by faith we might
receive the promise of the Spirit.
Commemorated in the Lord's Supper.
Matthew 26:26 While they were eating, Jesus took bread, gave thanks and
broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, "Take and eat; this is my
body." 27 Then he took the cup, gave thanks and offered it to them, saying,
"Drink from it, all of you. 28 This is my blood of the covenant, which is
poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.
1 Corinthians 11:23 For I received from the Lord what I also passed on
to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, 24 and when he
had given thanks, he broke it and said, "This is my body, which is for you;
do this in remembrance of me." 25 In the same way, after supper he took the
cup, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever
you drink it, in remembrance of me." 26 For whenever you eat this bread and
drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes.

Acts 5:29 Peter and the other apostles replied: "We must obey God

Prince and Saviour that he might give repentance and forgiveness of sins to
Israel.

Exodus 12:5 The animals you choose must be year-old males without
defect, and you may take them from the sheep or the goats. 6 Take care of them
until the fourteenth day of the month, when all the people of the community of
Israel must slaughter them at twilight. 7 Then they are to take some of the
blood and put it on the sides and tops of the doorframes of the houses where
they eat the lambs. 8 That same night they are to eat the meat roasted over the
fire, along with bitter herbs, and bread made without yeast. 9 Do not eat the
meat raw or cooked in water, but roast it over the fire--head, legs and inner
parts. 10 Do not leave any of it till morning; if some is left till morning, you
must burn it. 11 This is how you are to eat it: with your cloak tucked into your
belt, your sandals on your feet and your staff in your hand. Eat it in haste; it
is the LORD's Passover. 12 "On that same night I will pass through Egypt
and strike down every firstborn--both men and animals--and I will bring

Leviticus 16:30 because on this day atonement will be made for you, to

32 The priest who is anointed and ordained to succeed his father as high priest
is to make atonement. He is to put on the sacred linen garments 33 and make
atonement for the Most Holy Place, for the Tent of Meeting and the altar, and
for the priests and all the people of the community. 34 "This is to be a
lasting ordinance for you: Atonement is to be made once a year for all the sins
of the Israelites." And it was done, as the LORD commanded Moses.
with
Hebrews 9:7 But only the high priest entered the inner room, and that
only once a year, and never without blood, which he offered for himself and for
the sins the people had committed in ignorance. 8 The Holy Spirit was showing by
this that the way into the Most Holy Place had not yet been disclosed as long as
the first tabernacle was still standing. 9 This is an illustration for the
present time, indicating that the gifts and sacrifices being offered were not
able to clear the conscience of the worshiper. 10 They are only a matter of food
and drink and various ceremonial washings--external regulations applying until
the time of the new order. 11 When Christ came as high priest of the good things
that are already here, he went through the greater and more perfect tabernacle
that is not man-made, that is to say, not a part of this creation. 12 He did not
enter by means of the blood of goats and calves; but he entered the Most Holy
Place once for all by his own blood, having obtained eternal redemption. 13 The
blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a heifer sprinkled on those who are
ceremonially unclean sanctify them so that they are outwardly clean. 14 How much
more, then, will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered
himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to
death, so that we may serve the living God! 15 For this reason Christ is the
mediator of a new covenant, that those who are called may receive the promised
eternal inheritance--now that he has died as a ransom to set them free from the
sins committed under the first covenant. 16 In the case of a will, it is
necessary to prove the death of the one who made it, 17 because a will is in
force only when somebody has died; it never takes effect while the one who made
it is living. 18 This is why even the first covenant was not put into effect
without blood. 19 When Moses had proclaimed every commandment of the law to all
the people, he took the blood of calves, together with water, scarlet wool and
branches of hyssop, and sprinkled the scroll and all the people. 20 He said,
"This is the blood of the covenant, which God has commanded you to
keep." 21 In the same way, he sprinkled with the blood both the tabernacle
and everything used in its ceremonies. 22 In fact, the law requires that nearly
everything be cleansed with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no
forgiveness. 23 It was necessary, then, for the copies of the heavenly things to
be purified with these sacrifices, but the heavenly things themselves with
better sacrifices than these. 24 For Christ did not enter a man-made sanctuary
that was only a copy of the true one; he entered heaven itself, now to appear
for us in God's presence. 25 Nor did he enter heaven to offer himself again and
again, the way the high priest enters the Most Holy Place every year with blood
that is not his own. 26 Then Christ would have had to suffer many times since
the creation of the world. But now he has appeared once for all at the end of
the ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of himself. 27 Just as man is
destined to die once, and after that to face judgement, 28 so Christ was
sacrificed once to take away the sins of many people; and he will appear a
second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting
for him.
Leviticus 17:11 For the life of a creature is in the blood, and I have
given it to you to make atonement for yourselves on the altar; it is the blood
that makes atonement for one's life.
