The Death of Jesus
Foretold.
Isaiah 53:8 By oppression and judgement he was taken away. And who
can speak of his descendants? For he was cut off from the land of the living;
for the transgression of my people he was stricken.
Daniel 9:26 After the sixty-two `sevens,' the Anointed One will be cut
off and will have nothing. The people of the ruler who will come will destroy
the city and the sanctuary. The end will come like a flood: War will continue
until the end, and desolation's have been decreed.
Zechariah 13:7 "Awake, O sword, against my shepherd, against the
man who is close to me!" declares the LORD Almighty. "Strike the
shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered, and I will turn my hand against the
little ones.
Psalms 22: For the director of music. To [the tune of] "The Doe
of the Morning." A psalm of David.
1 My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from
saving me, so far from the words of my groaning?
2 O my God, I cry out by day, but you do not answer, by night, and am
not silent.
3 Yet you are enthroned as the Holy One; you are the praise of Israel.
4 In you our fathers put their trust; they trusted and you delivered
them.
5 They cried to you and were saved; in you they trusted and were not
disappointed.
6 But I am a worm and not a man, scorned by men and despised by the
people.
7 All who see me mock me; they hurl insults, shaking their heads:
8 "He trusts in the LORD; let the LORD rescue him. Let him
deliver him, since he delights in him."
9 Yet you brought me out of the womb; you made me trust in you even at
my mother's breast.
10 From birth I was cast upon you; from my mother's womb you have been
my God.
11 Do not be far from me, for trouble is near and there is no one to
help.
12 Many bulls surround me; strong bulls of Bashan encircle me.
13 Roaring lions tearing their prey open their mouths wide against me.
14 I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint. My
heart has turned to wax; it has melted away within me.
15 My strength is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue sticks to
the roof of my mouth; you lay me in the dust of death.
16 Dogs have surrounded me; a band of evil men has encircled me, they
have pierced my hands and my feet.
17 I can count all my bones; people stare and gloat over me.
18 They divide my garments among them and cast lots for my clothing.
19 But you, O LORD, be not far off; O my Strength, come quickly to
help me.
20 Deliver my life from the sword, my precious life from the power of
the dogs.
21 Rescue me from the mouth of the lions; save me from the horns of
the wild oxen.
22 I will declare your name to my brothers; in the congregation I will
praise you.
23 You who fear the LORD, praise him! All you descendants of Jacob,
honour him! Revere him, all you descendants of Israel!
24 For he has not despised or disdained the suffering of the afflicted
one; he has not hidden his face from him but has listened to his cry for help.
25 From you comes the theme of my praise in the great assembly; before
those who fear you will I fulfil my vows.
26 The poor will eat and be satisfied; they who seek the LORD will
praise him-- may your hearts live forever!
27 All the ends of the earth will remember and turn to the LORD, and
all the families of the nations will bow down before him,
28 for dominion belongs to the LORD and he rules over the nations.
29 All the rich of the earth will feast and worship; all who go down
to the dust will kneel before him-- those who cannot keep themselves alive.
30 Posterity will serve him; future generations will be told about the
Lord.
31 They will proclaim his righteousness to a people yet unborn-- for
he has done it.
Appointed by God.
Isaiah 53:6 We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has
turned to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all. 7 He
was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; he was led like a
lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is silent, so he did
not open his mouth. 8 By oppression and judgement he was taken away. And who can
speak of his descendants? For he was cut off from the land of the living; for
the transgression of my people he was stricken. 9 He was assigned a grave with
the wicked, and with the rich in his death, though he had done no violence, nor
was any deceit in his mouth. 10 Yet it was the LORD's will to crush him and
cause him to suffer, and though the LORD makes his life a guilt offering, he
will see his offspring and prolong his days, and the will of the LORD will
prosper in his hand.
Acts 2:23 This man was handed over to you by God's set purpose and
foreknowledge; and you, with the help of wicked men, put him to death by nailing
him to the cross.
Necessary for the redemption of man.
Luke 24:46 He told them, "This is what is written: The Christ
will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day,
John 12:24 I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the
ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many
seeds.
Acts 17:3 explaining and proving that the Christ had to suffer and
rise from the dead. "This Jesus I am proclaiming to you is the Christ,
" he said.
Acceptable as a sacrifice to God.
Matthew 20:28 just as the Son of Man did not come to be served,
but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."
Ephesians 5:2 and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and
gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.
1 Thessalonians 5:10 He died for us so that, whether we are awake or
asleep, we may live together with him.
Was voluntary.
Isaiah 53:12 Therefore I will give him a portion among the great,
and he will divide the spoils with the strong, because he poured out his life
unto death, and was numbered with the transgressors. For he bore the sin of
many, and made intercession for the transgressors.
Matthew 26:53 Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at
once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels?
John 10:17 The reason my Father loves me is that I lay down my
life--only to take it up again. 18 No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of
my own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up
again. This command I received from my Father."
Was undeserved.
Isaiah 53:9 He was assigned a grave with the wicked, and with the
rich in his death, though he had done no violence, nor was any deceit in his
mouth.
Mode of.
Foretold by Jesus.
Matthew 20:18 "We are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will
be betrayed to the chief priests and the teachers of the law. They will condemn
him to death 19 and will turn him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and flogged
and crucified. On the third day he will be raised to life!"
John 12:32 But I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all
men to myself." 33 He said this to show the kind of death he was going to
die.
Prefigured.
Numbers 21:8 The LORD said to Moses, "Make a snake and put it
up on a pole; anyone who is bitten can look at it and live."
with
John 3:14 Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so the Son
of Man must be lifted up,
Ignominious.
Hebrews 12:2 Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and
perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross,
scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
Accursed.
Deuteronomy 21:23 you must not leave his body on the tree
overnight. Be sure to bury him that same day, because anyone who is hung on a
tree is under God's curse. You must not desecrate the land the LORD your God is
giving you as an inheritance.
Galatians 3:13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by
becoming a curse for us, for it is written: "Cursed is everyone who is hung
on a tree."
Exhibited his humility.
Philippians 2:8 And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled
himself and became obedient to death-- even death on a cross!
A stumbling-block to Jews.
1 Corinthians 1:23 but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling
block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles,
Foolishness to Gentiles.
1 Corinthians 1:18 For the message of the cross is foolishness to
those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.
19 For it is written: "I will destroy the wisdom of the wise; the
intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate." 20 Where is the wise
man? Where is the scholar? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God
made foolish the wisdom of the world? 21 For since in the wisdom of God the
world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the
foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe. 22 Jews demand
miraculous signs and Greeks look for wisdom, 23 but we preach Christ crucified:
a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles,
Demanded by the Jews.
Matthew 27:22 "What shall I do, then, with Jesus who is
called Christ?" Pilate asked. They all answered, "Crucify him!"
23 "Why? What crime has he committed?" asked Pilate. But they shouted
all the louder, "Crucify him!"
Inflicted by the Gentiles.
Matthew 27:26 Then he released Barabbas to them. But he had Jesus
flogged, and handed him over to be crucified. 27 Then the governor's soldiers
took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole company of soldiers around
him. 28 They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him, 29 and then twisted
together a crown of thorns and set it on his head. They put a staff in his right
hand and knelt in front of him and mocked him. "Hail, king of the
Jews!" they said. 30 They spit on him, and took the staff and struck him on
the head again and again. 31 After they had mocked him, they took off the robe
and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him away to crucify him. 32 As
they were going out, they met a man from Cyrene, named Simon, and they forced
him to carry the cross. 33 They came to a place called Golgotha (which means The
Place of the Skull). 34 There they offered Jesus wine to drink, mixed with gall;
but after tasting it, he refused to drink it. 35 When they had crucified him,
they divided up his clothes by casting lots.
In the company of malefactors.
Isaiah 53:12 Therefore I will give him a portion among the great,
and he will divide the spoils with the strong, because he poured out his life
unto death, and was numbered with the transgressors. For he bore the sin of
many, and made intercession for the transgressors.
with
Matthew 27:38 Two robbers were crucified with him, one on his right
and one on his left.
Accompanied by preternatural signs.
Matthew 27:45 From the sixth hour until the ninth hour darkness
came over all the land. 46 About the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice,
<"Eloi, Eloi, lama <sabachthani?"--which means, "My God, my
God, why have you forsaken me?" 47 When some of those standing there heard
this, they said, "He's calling Elijah." 48 Immediately one of them ran
and got a sponge. He filled it with wine vinegar, put it on a stick, and offered
it to Jesus to drink. 49 The rest said, "Now leave him alone. Let's see if
Elijah comes to save him." 50 And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud
voice, he gave up his spirit. 51 At that moment the curtain of the temple was
torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook and the rocks split. 52 The
tombs broke open and the bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to
life. 53 They came out of the tombs, and after Jesus' resurrection they went
into the holy city and appeared to many people.
Emblamatical of the death unto sin.
Romans 6:3 Or don't you know that all of us who were baptised into
Christ Jesus were baptised into his death? 4 We were therefore buried with him
through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the
dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. 5 If we have
been united with him like this in his death, we will certainly also be united
with him in his resurrection. 6 For we know that our old self was crucified with
him so that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be
slaves to sin-- 7 because anyone who has died has been freed from sin. 8 Now if
we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him.
Galatians 2:20 I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live,
but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son
of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
Commemorated in the sacrament of the Lord's
Supper.
Luke 22:19 And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave
it to them, saying, "This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance
of me." 20 In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying,
"This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.
