The Resurrection of the Body
A doctrine of the Old Testament.
Job 19:26 And after my skin has been destroyed, yet in my flesh I will
see God;
Psalms 49:15 But God will redeem my life from the grave; he will
surely take me to himself. <Selah>
Isaiah 26:19 But your dead will live; their bodies will rise. You who
dwell in the dust, wake up and shout for joy. Your dew is like the dew of the
morning; the earth will give birth to her dead.
Daniel 12:2 Multitudes who sleep in the dust of the earth will awake:
some to everlasting life, others to shame and everlasting contempt.
Genesis 22:5 He said to his servants, "Stay here with the donkey
while I and the boy go over there. We will worship and then we will come back to
you."
with
Hebrews 11:19 Abraham reasoned that God could raise the dead, and
figuratively speaking, he did receive Isaac back from death.
A first principle of the gospel.
Hebrews 6:1 Therefore let us leave the elementary teachings about Christ
and go on to maturity, not laying again the foundation of repentance from acts
that lead to death, and of faith in God, 2 instruction about baptisms, the
laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgement.
Expected by the Jews.
John 11:24 Martha answered, "I know he will rise again in the
resurrection at the last day."
Hebrews 11:35 Women received back their dead, raised to life again.
Others were tortured and refused to be released, so that they might gain a
better resurrection.
Denied by the Sadducees.
Matthew 22:23 That same day the Sadducees, who say there is no
resurrection, came to him with a question.
Luke 20:27 Some of the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection,
came to Jesus with a question.
Acts 23:8 (The Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, and that
there are neither angels nor spirits, but the Pharisees acknowledge them all.)
Explained away by false teachers.
2 Timothy 2:18 who have wandered away from the truth. They say that the
resurrection has already taken place, and they destroy the faith of some.
Called in question by some in the early Church.
1 Corinthians 15:12 But if it is preached that Christ has been raised
from the dead, how can some of you say that there is no resurrection of the
dead?
Is not incredible.
Mark 12:24 Jesus replied, "Are you not in error because you do not
know the Scriptures or the power of God?
Acts 26:8 Why should any of you consider it incredible that God raises
the dead?
Is not contrary to reason.
John 12:24 I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the
ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many
seeds.
1 Corinthians 15:35 But someone may ask, "How are the dead
raised? With what kind of body will they come?" 36 How foolish! What you
sow does not come to life unless it dies. 37 When you sow, you do not plant the
body that will be, but just a seed, perhaps of wheat or of something else. 38
But God gives it a body as he has determined, and to each kind of seed he gives
its own body. 39 All flesh is not the same: Men have one kind of flesh, animals
have another, birds another and fish another. 40 There are also heavenly bodies
and there are earthly bodies; but the splendour of the heavenly bodies is one
kind, and the splendour of the earthly bodies is another. 41 The sun has one
kind of splendour, the moon another and the stars another; and star differs from
star in splendour. 42 So will it be with the resurrection of the dead. The body
that is sown is perishable, it is raised imperishable; 43 it is sown in
dishonour, it is raised in glory; it is sown in weakness, it is raised in power;
44 it is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body. If there is a
natural body, there is also a spiritual body.
Assumed and proved by our Lord.
Matthew 22:29 Jesus replied, "You are in error because you do not
know the Scriptures or the power of God. 30 At the resurrection people will
neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven.
31 But about the resurrection of the dead--have you not read what God said to
you, 32 `I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob' ? He
is not the God of the dead but of the living."
Luke 14:14 and you will be blessed. Although they cannot repay you,
you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous."
John 5:28 "Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming when
all who are in their graves will hear his voice 29 and come out--those who have
done good will rise to live, and those who have done evil will rise to be
condemned.
Preached by the Apostles.
Acts 4:2 They were greatly disturbed because the apostles were teaching
the people and proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection of the dead.
Acts 17:18 A group of Epicurean and Stoic philosophers began to
dispute with him. Some of them asked, "What is this babbler trying to
say?" Others remarked, "He seems to be advocating foreign gods."
They said this because Paul was preaching the good news about Jesus and the
resurrection.
Acts 24:15 and I have the same hope in God as these men, that there
will be a resurrection of both the righteous and the wicked.
Credibility of, shown by resurrection of
individuals.
Matthew 9:25 After the crowd had been put outside, he went in and took
the girl by the hand, and she got up.
Matthew 27:53 They came out of the tombs, and after Jesus'
resurrection they went into the holy city and appeared to many people.
Luke 7:14 Then he went up and touched the coffin, and those carrying
it stood still. He said, "Young man, I say to you, get up!"
John 11:44 The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with
strips of linen, and a cloth around his face. Jesus said to them, "Take off
the grave clothes and let him go."
Hebrews 11:35 Women received back their dead, raised to life again.
Others were tortured and refused to be released, so that they might gain a
better resurrection.
Certainty of, proved by the resurrection of
Christ.
1 Corinthians 15:12 But if it is preached that Christ has been raised
from the dead, how can some of you say that there is no resurrection of the
dead? 13 If there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been
raised. 14 And if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is
your faith. 15 More than that, we are then found to be false witnesses about
God, for we have testified about God that he raised Christ from the dead. But he
did not raise him if in fact the dead are not raised. 16 For if the dead are not
raised, then Christ has not been raised either. 17 And if Christ has not been
raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins. 18 Then those also who
have fallen asleep in Christ are lost. 19 If only for this life we have hope in
Christ, we are to be pitied more than all men. 20 But Christ has indeed been
raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.
Effected by the power of.
God.
Matthew 22:29 Jesus replied, "You are in error because you do not

Christ.
John 5:28 "Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming when all
who are in their graves will hear his voice 29 and come out--those who have done
good will rise to live, and those who have done evil will rise to be condemned.
John 6:39 And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose
none of all that he has given me, but raise them up at the last day. 40 For my
Father's will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall
have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day." 41 At this the
Jews began to grumble about him because he said, "I am the bread that came
down from heaven." 42 They said, "Is this not Jesus, the son of
Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can he now say, `I came down from
heaven'?" 43 "Stop grumbling among yourselves," Jesus answered.
44 "No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him, and I
will raise him up at the last day.
The Holy Spirit.
Romans 8:11 And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is
living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your
mortal bodies through his Spirit, who lives in you.
Shall be of all the dead.

who are in their graves will hear his voice

teaching the people and proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection of the dead.
1 Corinthians 15:21 For since death came through a man, the
resurrection of the dead comes also through a man. 22 For as in Adam all die, so
in Christ all will be made alive.
Rise first.
1 Corinthians 15:23 But each in his own turn: Christ, the firstfruits;
then, when he comes, those who belong to him.
1 Thessalonians 4:16 For the Lord himself will come down from heaven,
with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call
of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first.
Rise to eternal life.

some to everlasting life, others to shame and everlasting contempt.
John 5:29 and come out--those who have done good will rise to live,
and those who have done evil will rise to be condemned.
Be glorified with Christ.
Colossians 3:4 When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will
appear with him in glory.
Be as the Angels.
Matthew 22:30 At the resurrection people will neither marry nor be given
in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven.
Have incorruptible bodies.
1 Corinthians 15:42 So will it be with the resurrection of the dead. The
body that is sown is perishable, it is raised imperishable;
Have glorious and powerful bodies.
1 Corinthians 15:43 it is sown in dishonour, it is raised in glory; it is
sown in weakness, it is raised in power;

1 Thessalonians 4:17 After that, we who are still alive and are left
will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air.
And so we will be with the Lord forever.
The preaching of, caused.
Mocking.
Acts 17:32 When they heard about the resurrection of the dead, some of
them sneered, but others said, "We want to hear you again on this
subject."
Persecution.
Acts 23:6 Then Paul, knowing that some of them were Sadducees and the
others Pharisees, called out in the Sanhedrin, "My brothers, I am a
Pharisee, the son of a Pharisee. I stand on trial because of my hope in the
resurrection of the dead."
Acts 24:11 You can easily verify that no more than twelve days ago I
went up to Jerusalem to worship. 12 My accusers did not find me arguing with
anyone at the temple, or stirring up a crowd in the synagogues or anywhere else
in the city. 13 And they cannot prove to you the charges they are now making
against me. 14 However, I admit that I worship the God of our fathers as a
follower of the Way, which they call a sect. I believe everything that agrees
with the Law and that is written in the Prophets, 15 and I have the same hope in
God as these men, that there will be a resurrection of both the righteous and
the wicked.
Blessedness of those who have part in the first.
Revelation 20:6 Blessed and holy are those who have part in the first
resurrection. The second death has no power over them, but they will be priests
of God and of Christ and will reign with him for a thousand years.
Of the wicked, shall be to.
Shame and everlasting contempt.

Illustrative of the new-birth.
John 5:25 I tell you the truth, a time is coming and has now come when
the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live.
Illustrated.
Ezekiel 37:1 The hand of the LORD was upon me, and he brought me out by
the Spirit of the LORD and set me in the middle of a valley; it was full of
bones. 2 He led me back and forth among them, and I saw a great many bones on
the floor of the valley, bones that were very dry. 3 He asked me, "Son of
man, can these bones live?" I said, "O Sovereign LORD, you alone
know." 4 Then he said to me, "Prophesy to these bones and say to them,
`Dry bones, hear the word of the LORD! 5 This is what the Sovereign LORD says to
these bones: I will make breath enter you, and you will come to life. 6 I will
attach tendons to you and make flesh come upon you and cover you with skin; I
will put breath in you, and you will come to life. Then you will know that I am
the LORD.'" 7 So I prophesied as I was commanded. And as I was prophesying,
there was a noise, a rattling sound, and the bones came together, bone to bone.
8 I looked, and tendons and flesh appeared on them and skin covered them, but
there was no breath in them. 9 Then he said to me, "Prophesy to the breath;
prophesy, son of man, and say to it, `This is what the Sovereign LORD says: Come
from the four winds, O breath, and breathe into these slain, that they may
live.'" 10 So I prophesied as he commanded me, and breath entered them;
they came to life and stood up on their feet--a vast army.
1 Corinthians 15:36 How foolish! What you sow does not come to life
unless it dies. 37 When you sow, you do not plant the body that will be, but
just a seed, perhaps of wheat or of something else.
Associated with the Feast of Tabernacles.
Leviticus 23:1 The LORD said to Moses, 2 "Speak to the Israelites
and say to them: `These are my appointed feasts, the appointed feasts of the
LORD, which you are to proclaim as sacred assemblies. 3 "`There are six
days when you may work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath of rest, a day of
sacred assembly. You are not to do any work; wherever you live, it is a Sabbath
to the LORD. 4 "`These are the LORD's appointed feasts, the sacred
assemblies you are to proclaim at their appointed times: 5 The LORD's Passover
begins at twilight on the fourteenth day of the first month. 6 On the fifteenth
day of that month the LORD's Feast of Unleavened Bread begins; for seven days
you must eat bread made without yeast. 7 On the first day hold a sacred assembly
and do no regular work. 8 For seven days present an offering made to the LORD by
fire. And on the seventh day hold a sacred assembly and do no regular
work.'" 9 The LORD said to Moses, 10 "Speak to the Israelites and say
to them: `When you enter the land I am going to give you and you reap its
harvest, bring to the priest a sheaf of the first grain you harvest. 11 He is to
wave the sheaf before the LORD so it will be accepted on your behalf; the priest
is to wave it on the day after the Sabbath. 12 On the day you wave the sheaf,
you must sacrifice as a burnt offering to the LORD a lamb a year old without
defect, 13 together with its grain offering of two-tenths of an ephah of fine
flour mixed with oil--an offering made to the LORD by fire, a pleasing
aroma--and its drink offering of a quarter of a hin of wine. 14 You must not eat
any bread, or roasted or new grain, until the very day you bring this offering
to your God. This is to be a lasting ordinance for the generations to come,
wherever you live. 15 "`From the day after the Sabbath, the day you brought
the sheaf of the wave offering, count off seven full weeks. 16 Count off fifty
days up to the day after the seventh Sabbath, and then present an offering of
new grain to the LORD. 17 From wherever you live, bring two loaves made of
two-tenths of an ephah of fine flour, baked with yeast, as a wave offering of
firstfruits to the LORD. 18 Present with this bread seven male lambs, each a
year old and without defect, one young bull and two rams. They will be a burnt
offering to the LORD, together with their grain offerings and drink
offerings--an offering made by fire, an aroma pleasing to the LORD. 19 Then
sacrifice one male goat for a sin offering and two lambs, each a year old, for a
fellowship offering. 20 The priest is to wave the two lambs before the LORD as a
wave offering, together with the bread of the firstfruits. They are a sacred
offering to the LORD for the priest. 21 On that same day you are to proclaim a
sacred assembly and do no regular work. This is to be a lasting ordinance for
the generations to come, wherever you live. 22 "`When you reap the harvest
of your land, do not reap to the very edges of your field or gather the
gleanings of your harvest. Leave them for the poor and the alien. I am the LORD
your God.'" 23 The LORD said to Moses, 24 "Say to the Israelites: `On
the first day of the seventh month you are to have a day of rest, a sacred
assembly commemorated with trumpet blasts. 25 Do no regular work, but present an
offering made to the LORD by fire.'" 26 The LORD said to Moses, 27
"The tenth day of this seventh month is the Day of Atonement. Hold a sacred
assembly and deny yourselves, and present an offering made to the LORD by fire.
28 Do no work on that day, because it is the Day of Atonement, when atonement is
made for you before the LORD your God. 29 Anyone who does not deny himself on
that day must be cut off from his people. 30 I will destroy from among his
people anyone who does any work on that day. 31 You shall do no work at all.
This is to be a lasting ordinance for the generations to come, wherever you
live. 32 It is a sabbath of rest for you, and you must deny yourselves. From the
evening of the ninth day of the month until the following evening you are to
observe your sabbath." 33 The LORD said to Moses, 34 "Say to the
Israelites: `On the fifteenth day of the seventh month the LORD's Feast of
Tabernacles begins, and it lasts for seven days. 35 The first day is a sacred
assembly; do no regular work. 36 For seven days present offerings made to the
LORD by fire, and on the eighth day hold a sacred assembly and present an
offering made to the LORD by fire. It is the closing assembly; do no regular
work. 37 ("`These are the LORD's appointed feasts, which you are to
proclaim as sacred assemblies for bringing offerings made to the LORD by
fire--the burnt offerings and grain offerings, sacrifices and drink offerings
required for each day. 38 These offerings are in addition to those for the
LORD's Sabbaths and in addition to your gifts and whatever you have vowed and
all the freewill offerings you give to the LORD.) 39 "`So beginning with
the fifteenth day of the seventh month, after you have gathered the crops of the
land, celebrate the festival to the LORD for seven days; the first day is a day
of rest, and the eighth day also is a day of rest. 40 On the first day you are
to take choice fruit from the trees, and palm fronds, leafy branches and
poplars, and rejoice before the LORD your God for seven days. 41 Celebrate this
as a festival to the LORD for seven days each year. This is to be a lasting
ordinance for the generations to come; celebrate it in the seventh month. 42
Live in booths for seven days: All native-born Israelites are to live in booths
43 so your descendants will know that I had the Israelites live in booths when I
brought them out of Egypt. I am the LORD your God.'" 44 So Moses announced
to the Israelites the appointed feasts of the LORD.
Isaiah 25:6 On this mountain the LORD Almighty will prepare a feast of
rich food for all peoples, a banquet of aged wine-- the best of meats and the
finest of wines.
Isaiah 25:7 On this mountain he will destroy the shroud that enfolds
all peoples, the sheet that covers all nations;
Isaiah 25:8 he will swallow up death forever. The Sovereign LORD will
wipe away the tears from all faces; he will remove the disgrace of his people
from all the earth. The LORD has spoken. 9 In that day they will say,
"Surely this is our God; we trusted in him, and he saved us. This is the
LORD, we trusted in him; let us rejoice and be glad in his salvation."
1 Corinthians 15:54 When the perishable has been clothed with the
imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written
will come true: "Death has been swallowed up in victory."
